A small country, distinguished geographically by the crossing of rivers
and mountains, and to the west - by the constant of the sea.
In the North, it begins with a wonderful array of greens, inward - the
cliffs that have consolidated borders and even the nationality.
Then, the slopes of the World Heritage terraces that lead the Douro
to its estuary. Heading south, we cross the Buçaco forest, the poplar
groves, the medieval university of Coimbra, and the Mondego, which
sometimes floods the rice paddies. Then come the Lezíria and the Ta-
gus that begins the great march to the world we left. On the southern
bank of the Tagus the lowland begins to grow, the trees change, and
the flamingos take on other flights until we spread out over the fields
yellowed by the summer sun. The mountain foothills open to the sea,
the fading golden sands announce the south of Europe, but the wine
culture continues beyond the sea in archipelagos of giant possibilities:
"the dream of Madeira" and the unique spirit of Azores islands.
